Synopsis
Five random days in the lives of a FreCecile Casselnch family, spread out over a dozen years, paint a telling picture of the ups and downs of human relationships in this comedy-drama from France. Robert Duval (Jacques Gamblin) is a taxi driver who is married to Marie-Jeanne (Zabou Breitman), who has shed the bohemian ways of her youth with the passage of time. Robert's father (Roger Dumas) has been generous enough to give his son the comfortable home he shares with Marie-Jeanne and their children, but that doesn't mean there's always a genuine respect between them. Robert and Marie-Jeanne have three children -- their eldest Albert (Pio Marmai) is struggling with the rigors of medical school when we first meet him, while Raphael (Marc-Andre Grondin) is a teen trying to decide what to do with his life and Fleur (Deborah Francois) is still learning to be comfortable with her femininity. Between 1988 and 2000, the Duval family finds themselves dealing with the sort of life changes that affect most families, seeming both typical and revelatory at the same time. THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE was the first French feature for writer and director Remi Bezancon after making his debut with the Quebecois picture C.R.A.Z.Y.

Beautiful movie - one of my all time favourites!5
I thought this movie had everything: superb acting, great script which took you through 5 key periods in the life of a pretty typical family. That might sound run of the mill but every scene was beautifully crafted. The film was at times side-splittingly funny (without giving too much away, the daughters sexual encounter, the fathers recollection of a prank he played at school), intensely moving and at the same time life-affirming. What was impressive was that everything in the movie was 100% believable, in terms both of dialogue and the acting which I thought was marvellous from all the main characters. All the facets of family life are laid out here : the generation gap, teenage years, death, temptation, loyalty, finding your way in life, romance, sibling rivalry, laughter, pride, love, sickness, worry for loved ones, keeping things from those who love us, the family "pecking order", the family bond, eccentricities..I saw the movie in November and even months later I still find myself sometimes thinking of scenes from this film, it really was that good! I'm ordering an advance DVD copy now..

le premier jour du reste de ta vie5
Really loved this film. It was very well acted, down to earth, to the point about family life, teenage angsta general family worries. A film that went straight to the heart where you could identify with all the characters with all their ups and downs.Thoroughly recommend it to both adults and teenagers, not just francophiles as the subject matter is universal and the storyline and script very well written

Delightful French Comedy4
Came across this film based on its short-listing for best film in the Cesars (French Oscars)for 2009. The plot is slight, almost non-existent, consisting of little more than five episodes from different periods in the life of an "ordinary" French family. But don't let that put you off, the French do this so well; this film is funny, sad, heart-warming and beautifully acted. The phrase "life-affirming" is much overused but in this case it's appropriate. An excellent script is beautifully played by a terrific cast and at the end you'll be left with a fond memory of a great little movie. Heartily recommended if you like this kind of film.
